About
Who we are, and how we work
Vetiver & Vale exists to make one hard thing easier: choosing a cologne without being hyped, upsold, or lied to. We are independent, we publish our method, and we tell you plainly what we did and did not do.
Why this site exists
Buying cologne online is oddly frustrating. The "best cologne" lists rarely show a price, almost never put the options in a comparison table, and lean on a vague "we tested these" claim with no method behind it. Half the dupe results are brand-owned stores that only push their own line. And nobody tells you the honest truth that a $30 bottle often gets you most of the way to a $200 icon.
We started Vetiver & Vale to be the version of that page we wished existed: a comparison table you can read in one screen, prices pulled live from Amazon rather than typed in once and left to rot, honest cons on every pick, an original-versus-dupe price table nobody else publishes, and a genuine beginner path instead of a wall of jargon.
Who writes it
Vetiver & Vale is written by Stephen V., an enthusiast — someone genuinely into fragrance, not a perfumer and not an industry insider. That framing is deliberate and it is honest. We are not going to imply a credential we do not hold or a nose we did not train. What Stephen V. brings instead is patience with the useful, boring parts: reading the official note breakdowns, compiling what large numbers of actual wearers report on Fragrantica and Reddit, comparing live prices across retailers, and writing it up plainly for someone who just wants to smell good without overthinking it.
What we are:an independent publisher that researches men's colognes and ranks them transparently.
What we are not: a lab, a perfume house, or a panel of experts. We have no trained perfumer on staff, we do not run hands-on scent tests in a controlled setting, and we will never claim we do.
How we compete without a lab
The pages that outrank us lean on brand authority or a "we tested twenty colognes" claim with no visible method. We cannot imitate a testing lab honestly, so we do not try. We compete on the one thing the whole field skips: radical transparency of method. Every factual claim — a note pyramid, a launch year, a concentration — is traced to the manufacturer or a reputable reference. Our scoring rubric is published, so a verdict on one page means the same thing as a verdict on another. And where a scent's reputation outruns the evidence, we say so on the page.
Read the how we review page for the full method, our editorial policy for how we handle independence and corrections, and the affiliate disclosure for exactly how the site is funded.
Independence & funding
Vetiver & Vale is published by Type 5 Marketing LLC and funded by affiliate commissions — mostly Amazon. When you buy through one of our links we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That is the entire business model, and it is worth being blunt about what it does and does not buy: it never changes a ranking, we accept no sponsored placements, and we accept no free bottles in exchange for coverage. When the cheaper clone is the smarter buy than the designer original, we link to the clone.
