Questions
Frequently asked
What is the difference between cologne and perfume?
Technically they are the same kind of product at different strengths: "cologne" (eau de cologne) is a lighter concentration and "perfume" (parfum) is a stronger one, with eau de toilette and eau de parfum in between. In everyday American usage, "cologne" is also just the word for a men's fragrance. Full breakdown in cologne vs perfume.
What do EDT, EDP and parfum actually mean?
They are concentrations of fragrance oil. Eau de toilette (EDT) is lighter and shorter-lived; eau de parfum (EDP) is stronger and lasts longer; parfum/extrait is the most concentrated. Higher concentration generally means more strength, more longevity, and a higher price. See fragrance concentrations explained.
How many sprays of cologne should I use?
For most eau de toilettes, two to four sprays; for a stronger eau de parfum, two to three. Over-application is the most common mistake — if people can smell you from across a room, it is too much. Our how to apply cologne guide covers where to spray.
Where should I apply cologne?
To warm pulse points where blood is close to the skin: the neck, behind the jaw, and the chest work best. Do not rub your wrists together — it can crush the top notes. A spray onto clothing can also help a scent last, applied carefully.
How do I make my cologne last longer?
Apply to moisturized skin (dry skin holds scent poorly), spray pulse points, and consider a matching stronger concentration. Skin type matters more than people expect. Full list in how to make cologne last longer.
What is the best cologne for a beginner?
Something approachable, versatile and inexpensive — a fresh or lightly sweet scent that is hard to dislike and works in most situations. Start with our best colognes for beginners, and do not spend a lot on your first bottle.
Are cologne dupes and clones legit, or are they fakes?
They are legit. Clone houses like Lattafa, Armaf and Al Haramain make original fragrances inspired by popular designer accords — that is completely different from a counterfeit pretending to be the designer bottle itself, which we never recommend. Millions of people wear clones happily. See our dupes & clones hub.
Do dupes smell exactly like the original?
Rarely exactly, and any claim that they do is a community-assessed judgment, not a lab match. The best ones get you most of the way there; others are the same general vibe rather than a twin. We rank on how close and how well it performs — a close-but-weak clone is a worse buy than a slightly-less-close one that lasts. See the best cologne dupes.
What is the best cologne for summer?
Fresh, aquatic and citrus scents that stay crisp in heat rather than turning heavy. Our summer cologne roundup ranks the best options, from budget to designer.
What is a good cheap cologne?
Plenty of inexpensive colognes punch well above their price — budget designer bottles and clone-house releases especially. Our best colognes under $50 roundup covers the standouts that do not smell cheap.
Should I try a cologne before buying a full bottle?
Yes — a scent smells different on your skin than on paper, and different again after it dries down. A sampler set or decant lets you wear it for a full day for a few dollars instead of gambling on a full bottle. See the best cologne sampler sets.
How long does cologne last on skin?
It depends on concentration and your skin. A lighter eau de toilette might last three to five hours; a strong eau de parfum can go eight or more. Oily, moisturized skin holds fragrance longer than dry skin.
What are top, heart and base notes?
The note pyramid describes how a scent unfolds over time. Top notes are what you smell first (often citrus or fresh notes that fade fast); heart notes emerge after 15-30 minutes; base notes (woods, amber, musk) linger for hours. A review should walk all three.
Is cologne different from aftershave?
Yes. Aftershave is primarily for soothing and disinfecting skin after shaving and is usually lightly scented and short-lived; cologne is a fragrance meant to last. Some men use both, applied separately.
How should I store cologne?
Away from heat, light and humidity — a cool, dark drawer or closet, not a steamy bathroom or a sunny windowsill. Heat and UV break down the fragrance oils and shorten a bottle's life.
How do you review colognes if you don't test them in a lab?
We compile the official note breakdowns, cross-check what large numbers of real wearers report on longevity and projection, compare live prices, and score against a published rubric — and we say plainly that we did not lab-test the scent. Full method on the how we review page.
How do you make money, and does it affect your picks?
We earn affiliate commissions, mostly through Amazon, at no extra cost to you. It never changes a ranking — when the cheaper clone is the better buy, we link to it anyway. Full affiliate disclosure.
