It is also a question worth being honest about, because the fragrances that generate the most comment are usually not the ones you should wear every day. Compliment-getters tend to be sweet, loud and distinctive. Those three qualities are exactly what makes a fragrance a poor choice for a shared office or a warm afternoon. What actually makes people comment
There is no mystery to it, and it is not really about quality. Four things drive comment rates, and every bottle on this page has at least three of them.
- Sweetness. Vanilla, tonka, caramel and amber are food-adjacent, and human noses are unusually generous toward them. Almost nothing that generates compliments is bone dry.
- Projection. Nobody comments on a fragrance they cannot smell from a normal conversational distance. A beautiful skin-scent will be admired by exactly one person: you.
- Familiarity with a twist. Completely unfamiliar scents confuse people; completely familiar ones go unremarked. The sweet spot is a recognizable shape with one odd, memorable element.

- Comment rate replaces our usual versatility column. This is a judgment from aggregated wearer reports across Fragrantica, Basenotes and r/fragrance, not a survey we ran.
- Scent, longevity and value carry over from our standard rubric.
- Wearability is scored honestly and it drags several of these down. A high comment rate and a low wearability score is the signature of a bottle you should own but not default to.
We have not tested any of these in a lab and we do not run wear trials with panels of strangers. What we have done is read a lot of wearer reports and rank consistently.

We have not run a compliment study. Nobody has, in any rigorous way — and any site claiming a hard number for "compliments per wear" invented it.
The application mistake that kills compliments
The single most common reason a compliment-getting fragrance stops getting compliments is that its owner over-applies it. Sweet base notes build for hours after you spray, and you stop being able to smell your own fragrance long before anyone else does.
