Vanilla is not one thing
The useful thing to understand is that "vanilla" covers a wide range of effects depending on what it is blended with, and that is what separates a sophisticated bottle from a candle.

The over-application problem, specifically
Vanilla-heavy fragrances are the easiest category in all of fragrance to over-apply, for a mechanical reason: vanilla and tonka are base-note materials, so they build slowly and peak hours after you spray. You apply four sprays at 6pm because it seems quiet, and by 9pm you are unbearable at a dinner table — while having gone nose-blind to your own scent and having no idea.
The rule is simple and worth following literally: one spray of a sweet gourmand, two at absolute maximum, and one fewer than that if you will be indoors for hours. If you think it has faded after twenty minutes, it has not — you have acclimatized.
