The best colognes under $20

At twenty dollars the question is not whether a fragrance is good. It is whether anyone can hear what you paid. Six bottles scored on exactly that.

By Stephen V.Updated How we review
#ad

We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes a verdict, and we say so when the cheaper product is the better buy. How this works.

Buy Maison Alhambra Glacier Ultra. It is the one bottle under twenty dollars that is a genuine eau de parfum in a full 3.4 oz bottle, and concentration is the single thing that separates a cheap fragrance from a fragrance that smells cheap. It is for the reader who wants one inexpensive bottle that holds up through a working day. If you want the one that gets the most compliments per dollar instead, it is Lattafa Ana Abiyedh Rouge, and you trade half the wear time for it.

This page exists because the budget ladder on this site stops too high. We already rank colognes under $30, under $50 and under $100, and every one of those pages quietly assumes you have at least a drugstore budget. Under twenty dollars is a different market with a different failure mode, and it deserves a different rubric rather than the same list with the expensive entries deleted. Nothing on this page appears on the under-$30 roundup.

The one thing that goes wrong under $20

It is not quality control and it is not safety. Everything here is made in a real factory to real standards, and none of it will do something to your skin that a thirty-dollar bottle would not. What goes wrong at this price is narrower and more annoying than that, and it comes in two forms.

The cheap-smelling tell.Inexpensive fragrance is cheap because of what the formula leaves out, not because of what it puts in. The loud, recognizable aroma chemicals are affordable; the naturals, and the dozen supporting materials that round a blend out and hold it together, are not. Strip those away and you get a scent that is recognizable but hollow — loud for ten minutes, slightly scratchy in the top notes, and conspicuously flat where a more expensive version would have texture. That is the thing people mean when they say a fragrance smells cheap, and it is audible to people who know nothing about fragrance at all.

The two-hour problem. The other corner that gets cut is concentration. Most of what sells under twenty dollars is an eau de toilette or an eau de cologne — roughly 5–15% and 2–5% fragrance oil respectively, against 15–20% for an eau de parfum, on the scale we set out in fragrance concentrations explained. Less oil means less to smell and less to last. A bottle that is gone by lunchtime is not a bargain; it is a fragrance you have to carry with you.

So the rubric below is not the one we use on the designer pages. Alongside scent, longevity, versatility and value, every pick is scored on "doesn't read cheap"— how well it hides its budget from somebody standing next to you. That column is the whole point of the page and it is weighted hardest in the ranking, which is why the cheapest bottle here is not the winner and the most heavily advertised one is not either.

Where the bargains actually are

One structural fact decides most of this list: the clone houses have made the sub-twenty-dollar eau de parfum a normal product, and the legacy drugstore brands have not. Houses like Maison Alhambra and Lattafa build to a price by using inexpensive aroma chemicals at a high concentration, which produces a fragrance that lasts. The drugstore names build to a price by diluting a simple formula, which produces a fragrance that does not. Both are honest businesses. Only one of them is a good deal at this budget, and that is why the top of this list comes from the value houses rather than the brands you would recognize in a pharmacy aisle. We go into the economics of those houses in are cologne clones worth it.

The other thing worth knowing before you spend: under twenty dollars, bottle size swings the real cost more than the sticker does. A 5 oz splash at nine dollars and a 1.7 oz spray at seventeen are not the same purchase, and the per-millilitre cost between the cheapest and the most expensive bottle on this page differs by roughly a factor of ten. We note the size on every card for that reason.

Pros

  • Eau de parfum concentration at about fifteen dollars, which is the arbitrage this whole page is about - roughly 15-20% oil against the 5-15% of almost everything else at this price
  • Cinnamon, pepper and lemon over lavender, clary sage and patchouli into vanilla, amber and cedarwood - a real structure with somewhere to go, not one accord repeated
  • Drier and cooler than the Gaultier Ultra Male it interprets, which makes it more wearable in an office and in warm weather than the sweeter original
  • Full 3.4 oz bottle, so the per-wear cost is the lowest of any sprayable here
  • The lavender-and-vanilla spine is a recognizable, widely liked register rather than an experiment

Cons

  • Not a note-for-note Ultra Male match - it is a spicier interpretation, and anyone buying it as a replica will hear the difference
  • Less projection than the designer original it takes after
  • The cedarwood base is drier than the fruity build most people expect from this family
  • Maison Alhambra publishes no perfumer and little house information, which is normal in this segment and still a real gap

Don't buy this if…

…you want an exact Ultra Male replica, or you specifically want the pear-and-blackcurrant sweetness of the original

This wins on a technicality that happens to be the most important fact on the page. Nearly everything sold under twenty dollars is diluted; this is not. The published pyramid runs cinnamon, pepper and lemon over lavender, clary sage and patchouli, into vanilla, amber and cedarwood — noticeably drier and spicier than the fruit-forward Gaultier build it takes after, which is a gain rather than a loss for most people, because a lot of wearers find Ultra Male itself too sweet to actually use. What you are buying is a competent, cool, slightly peppery lavender-vanilla that holds through an afternoon, and nobody standing next to you is going to guess the number on the box. More from the house in our Maison Alhambra roundup, and the full field it competes in on Le Male dupes.

Pros

  • Scores highest on this page's weighted column by a clear margin - the saffron-amber signature it borrows reads as a niche fragrance, not a budget one
  • Gets that signature across immediately, which matters when the alternative is a scent that needs an hour to become interesting
  • The accord it points at is Baccarat Rouge 540, a fragrance that costs more than ten times this bottle
  • Small 2.0 oz bottle is genuinely easy to try, and it is unisex, so it is not a wasted purchase if it turns out not to suit you

Cons

  • Shortest sprayable wear on this page - four to five hours is the common report
  • Blunter than the fragrance it takes after; it announces where the original glows
  • Published note lists disagree - Lattafa's own description leads with bitter almond and saffron into jasmine and cedar, while community databases list a fruitier pear-and-caramel pyramid, and we cannot reconcile them
  • 2.0 oz at this price is a worse per-millilitre deal than the winner's 3.4 oz

Don't buy this if…

…you need all-day wear from one application, or you want a conventional masculine fresh or fougere scent

If the thing you are worried about is somebody guessing what you paid, this is the bottle. The saffron-and-amber accord it reaches for belongs to one of the most recognizable expensive fragrances of the last decade, and that register — slightly sweet, slightly medicinal, distinctly not drugstore — is the opposite of the cheap-smelling tell. The honest cost is on the clock: it fades at around four to five hours, so this is a fragrance you spray when you leave rather than one that carries a whole day. A transparency note we will not smooth over: the published note lists for it genuinely contradict each other, so we are giving you both rather than choosing the one that tells a better story. Its full field is ranked on Baccarat Rouge 540 dupes.

Pros

  • Clean, fruity-fresh and genuinely inoffensive - the lowest-risk scent profile on this page
  • A recognizable mainstream label rather than a house nobody outside fragrance forums has heard of, which matters if a gift recipient reads the box
  • Rock-bottom price on a full 3.4 oz bottle makes it a no-risk buy
  • Works for casual warm-weather days, and for a teenager's first bottle, without any instruction

Cons

  • Weak longevity and projection - it sits close to the skin and does not carry an afternoon
  • Simple and a little generic; there is no development to speak of
  • Nothing here will get remarked on, which is the flip side of nothing here being disliked

Don't buy this if…

…you want a scent that lasts, or one that makes any kind of impression

Every budget page needs the bottle you cannot get wrong, and this is it. Nautica Blue is the lighter, sweeter, fruitier sibling of Nautica Voyage, and at thirteen dollars for a full bottle the cost of being wrong about it is roughly the price of a sandwich. It scores mid-table rather than high because this page's weighted column is about hiding the budget, and Blue does that by being so clean and so unremarkable that there is nothing to give away — a legitimate strategy, and a less interesting one than the two picks above it. Buy it if you want one inoffensive fresh bottle and no decisions. The rest of this tier is on best colognes for teens.

Pros

  • The cheapest fragrance on this site, in the largest bottle on this page - the per-wear cost is close to nothing
  • A genuine aromatic fougere with lavender, anise and geranium over tonka, vanilla and musk - not an imitation of anything, it is the original article
  • Still manufactured and widely stocked sixty years on, which is a kind of evidence no new budget brand can offer
  • Clean, recognizable barbershop character that suits a shave-and-shower routine

Cons

  • Short wear - most wearer reports put clear scent at one to four hours, well short of the listing's long-lasting claim
  • It smells exactly like 1964. That is the single fact you need, and whether it is right for you is not something we can decide for you
  • The anise is divisive; some wearers find the opening medicinal or oddly sweet
  • A splash bottle with no atomizer, in a range of near-identical green bottles - the cologne, the splash-on lotion and the after shave are easy to mix up on the listing

Don't buy this if…

…you want anything that reads as contemporary, or you have no affection for the barbershop style

Brut scores oddly well on this page's main column for an eight-dollar bottle, and the reason is instructive: it does not read as a cheap imitation of an expensive fragrance, because it is not imitating anything. It reads as itself, from 1964, which is a completely different kind of cheap — the kind with sixty years of continuous production behind it. What it cannot do is last; one to four hours is the honest range, and it is a splash rather than a spray. Buy it for the ritual and the price, not as your only bottle. Pros

  • The bergamot-ginger-cedarwood profile is easy to wear and sits close to the modern fresh-designer template
  • Small 1.7 oz bottle means genuinely low commitment
  • Sold as an eau de parfum, and frequently discounted below its list price
  • Makes no pretense of being a designer product on the bottle itself

Cons

  • Modest longevity - three to four hours is the common report, the worst sprayable result on this page
  • Heavy social-media marketing sets expectations the product cannot meet, and the backlash that follows is not really the fragrance's fault
  • No published perfumer, house history or provenance of any kind
  • 1.7 oz at seventeen dollars is the worst per-millilitre value here by a wide margin

Don't buy this if…

…you want a fragrance you can rely on all day, or brand provenance matters to you

Included because a great many people arrive at this budget having seen this bottle promoted and want to know whether it is real. It is real, it is fine, and it is a perfectly reasonable seventeen-dollar fragrance that smells like a perfectly reasonable seventeen-dollar fragrance. The gap between that and how it is marketed is the entire story, and it is why it ranks below cheaper bottles here: on value per millilitre and on the clock it loses to every pick above it. Our full assessment, including what the brand does and does not publish about itself, is in the YCZ cologne review.

Pros

  • Large 4 oz bottle at a very low price, so the cost of being wrong is almost nothing
  • Green and coniferous rather than aquatic - lemon, galbanum, lavender, geranium and violet over oakmoss and balsam fir, a more interesting shape than most budget fresh scents
  • Reviewers describe it as borrowing the skeleton of Green Irish Tweed, built around the same dihydromyrcenol freshness
  • Nearly forty years of continuous production, and a pleasant casual fragrance on its own terms

Cons

  • Eau de cologne concentration, the weakest on this page: reviewers report projection gone inside the first hour
  • Built for cost in an audible way - one review we read concludes it will always smell like a bottle you paid ten dollars for, which is exactly the failure this page scores against
  • The balsamic, piney direction sits further from its inspiration than the comparison implies, so the pedigree is a family resemblance rather than a match
  • Explicitly not a formal or evening fragrance; reviewers rule out date nights and boardrooms in plain terms

Don't buy this if…

…you want anything that could plausibly be mistaken for the Creed it gets compared to, or you need a fragrance that survives a working day

Aspen is here as the honest last place, and the reason is the thesis of the page rather than any specific defect. It is a real fragrance with a real history — 1989, Coty's answer to the fresh-fougere boom, and close enough to Green Irish Tweed's structure that reviewers say so outright. What it cannot do is hide its materials. It is an eau de cologne, the projection is gone within the hour, and it reads inexpensive because it is. At four dollars more, the winner on this page gives you an eau de parfum that does not. Buy it as a cheap casual splash if the green-pine direction appeals; do not buy it expecting the Creed. Its full field is on Green Irish Tweed dupes.

How to spend twenty dollars well

Buy concentration, not brand. At this budget the label on the box is worth nothing and the concentration on the box is worth everything. An eau de parfum from a house you have never heard of will outlast an eau de toilette from a name you recognize, every time, because there is simply more fragrance in it. If you only remember one thing from this page, make it this one: check whether it says EDP.

Check the millilitres, not the price. The bottles here run from 1.7 oz to 5 oz. That is a threefold difference in what you are actually buying, and the sticker prices are all within ten dollars of each other. The cheapest sprayable per millilitre on this page is the winner; the most expensive is the one with the biggest advertising spend.

One good cheap bottle beats three. The temptation at this price is to buy four and build a rotation for the cost of one designer bottle. It is a worse plan than it sounds: you end up with four fragrances you are lukewarm about and no habit of wearing any of them. Buy one, wear it for a month, then decide what the second one needs to do differently. The method is in how to build a fragrance wardrobe.

Spray more, not less.Standard advice is two or three sprays. With a low-concentration budget bottle, four is reasonable, and it is not the social risk that four sprays of a strong eau de parfum would be — there is less in each spray. The exception is the Lattafa above, which is a proper EDP and should be treated like one. The general dose rules are in how to apply cologne.

When twenty dollars is the wrong budget

Two cases. The first is a gift. A sub-twenty-dollar bottle is a hard present to give, not because it is bad but because the recipient can look up what it cost, and the gesture ends up doing more work than the fragrance. If that is the job, the honest floor is higher — see cologne gifts under $50.

The second is if you want a signature scent you will wear every day for years. Nothing here is built for that, and the right move is not to spend more on one bottle but to spend fifteen dollars finding out what you like first. A sampler set gets you eight to eleven designer fragrances to wear for a day each, which is a far better use of twenty dollars than a full bottle of anything on this page if you do not yet know what you want. Those are ranked on best cologne sampler sets. And if your budget is genuinely a little higher than the title of this page, the next rung up is a meaningfully better shelf: colognes under $30.

How we picked

We did not lab-test this gear

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty products. We have not lab-tested any of these, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published specifications, decoded the ingredient (INCI) lists active by active, ran the math where there was math to run, and scored each product against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research — not measurements we took, because we do not have a lab and we will not pretend we do. Where a number came from someone else's work, we name them in Sources.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best cologne under $20?
Maison Alhambra Glacier Ultra. It is the only pick on this page that is a genuine eau de parfum in a full 3.4 oz bottle, and concentration is what decides whether a cheap fragrance lasts. If you want the one that smells the most expensive rather than the one that lasts longest, it is Lattafa Ana Abiyedh Rouge.
Does cheap cologne actually smell cheap?
Some of it does, and it is a specific thing rather than a vague one. Inexpensive formulas leave out the supporting materials that give a blend texture, so the result is recognizable but hollow — loud briefly, a little scratchy on top, and flat where a better version would have depth. That is audible to people who know nothing about fragrance. The way to avoid it on a budget is to buy a higher concentration from a value house rather than a diluted formula from a familiar name.
How long does a $20 cologne last on skin?
It depends almost entirely on concentration rather than price. The eau de parfum on this page is commonly reported at a working day; the eau de toilette and eau de cologne picks run from about one to five hours. If longevity is your priority, read the concentration on the box and ignore everything else — the scale is explained in fragrance concentrations.
Is it better to buy one $60 cologne or three $20 ones?
One, in almost every case. Three cheap bottles tends to produce three fragrances you are lukewarm about rather than a rotation you actually use. The exception is if you genuinely do not know what you like yet — and in that case the best answer is neither: spend twenty dollars on a sampler set, wear eight scents for a day each, and then buy one bottle you are sure about.
Are the cheap Lattafa and Maison Alhambra bottles fake?
No. They are original fragrances from real houses, not counterfeits. A clone is a legal product built to smell close to a famous scent; a fake is a bottle claiming to be a designer fragrance, which we never link. The difference, and how to spot the second kind, is covered in how to spot fake cologne.
Can you wear a $20 cologne to work?
Yes, and the low concentration of most budget bottles actually makes them easier to get right in a shared room than a strong eau de parfum. The usual caution applies to the Lattafa on this page, which is a real EDP and should be dosed like one. Our office ranking is best colognes for the office.
