The best Le Male dupes

Le Male is three fragrances wearing one name, and every clone targets a different one. Here is which is which.

Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male has been on shelves since 1995 and has spawned one of the most confusing product families in men's fragrance. Ask for a Le Male clone and you will be handed bottles copying three completely different scents, none of which will be labeled clearly. This page fixes that.

The short version: the clone market has thoroughly covered Ultra Male and Le Male Elixir, and has essentially ignored the 1995 original. If the original is what you want, the honest recommendation is to buy the original — and we will explain why below rather than pointing you at something that will disappoint you.

The three Le Males

  • Le Male (1995). Mint and lavender over vanilla and tonka, in a sailor-striped bottle. Barbershop-fresh on top, sweet underneath. Nothing else smells quite like it, which is exactly the problem for clone houses. Our Le Male review covers it properly.
  • Ultra Male (2015).The sweet, fruity, gourmand reworking — pear and blackcurrant over the lavender-vanilla spine. Enormously popular and heavily cloned.
  • Le Male Elixir (2023). Honey, vanilla and tobacco over the same base. Denser and warmer again. Also heavily cloned, despite being recent.

These are flankers, not concentrations. They are separate compositions that share a name and a rough family resemblance — a distinction we go through in cologne vs eau de parfum, and one that causes more bad fragrance purchases than any other single misunderstanding.

Clone, not counterfeit

Every bottle on this page is an original fragrance from a legitimate house, sold under its own name, built to evoke a famous accord. Scent formulas are not protected the way logos and trademarks are, so this is a legal product category. A counterfeit is a fake bottle claiming to be a Gaultier product — a different thing entirely, one we never link, and one our guide to spotting fakes helps you avoid.

How we ranked them

  • Similarity is scored against the specific bottle each clone targets, and the target is named on every pick. It is a judgment from aggregated community comparisons, not a lab match.
  • Scent, longevity, projection and value follow our published rubric.
  • We have not included anything aimed at the 1995 original, because nothing we could verify does that job well enough to recommend.

Pros

  • Widely reported as the closest available impression of Le Male Elixir
  • Mint over vanilla is the recognizable Le Male DNA, done well
  • Very strong longevity - typical of the house
  • A fraction of the designer price

Cons

  • Sweeter and less refined than the bottle it targets
  • Too heavy for warm weather or a shared office
  • Targets the 2023 Elixir, not the 1995 original

Don't buy this if…

you want the crisp barbershop original, or gourmand sweetness is not for you

The Kingdom is the bottle the community reaches for when someone asks for a Le Male Elixir alternative, and it is the best-executed thing on this page. Mint and vanilla are the load-bearing notes, which is what makes it read as Le Male family rather than as a generic sweet gourmand. It is sweeter than the Gaultier and less polished in the transitions, which is the standard clone trade. The rest of the house's catalog is covered in our Lattafa roundup.

Pros

  • Cinnamon and pepper give it a dryness Ultra Male itself lacks
  • The lavender-and-vanilla spine is unmistakably Le Male family
  • Cheapest bottle on this page
  • Cooler and more wearable than the very sweet original

Cons

  • Not a note-for-note Ultra Male match - it is a spicier interpretation
  • Less projection than the Gaultier
  • Cedarwood base is drier than the fruity original

Don't buy this if…

you want an exact Ultra Male replica, or you specifically like the pear-and-blackcurrant sweetness

The published pyramid runs cinnamon, pepper and lemon over lavender, clary sage and patchouli, into vanilla, amber and cedarwood. That is noticeably drier and spicier than Ultra Male's fruit-forward build, and the honest description is "interpretation" rather than "clone." A lot of people find Ultra Male too sweet to wear, and this is the version of that idea they can actually use. More from the house on our Maison Alhambra roundup.

Pros

  • Apple, bergamot and pineapple over lavender and vanilla tracks Ultra Male closely
  • Frequently described as a near one-to-one impression
  • Very cheap even by clone-house standards
  • Strong performance

Cons

  • Reported by several wearers as overly sweet and cloying next to the original
  • The least versatile bottle here - evenings and cold weather only
  • Sweetness can read synthetic at close range

Don't buy this if…

you already find Ultra Male too sweet, or you need something you can wear in daylight

Ramz Silver is the more literal Ultra Male impression of the two here — fruit on top, lavender and vanilla underneath, in roughly the proportions the original uses. The recurring criticism in wearer reports is that it pushes the sweetness further than the Gaultier does, which is a genuine issue given how sweet Ultra Male already is. Ranked below Glacier Ultra on wearability rather than on accuracy: it is closer, and harder to wear.

How we picked these

Published note pyramids from Fragrantica and the houses, aggregated community comparison reports, live Amazon prices, and our published rubricwith a similarity column scored against each clone's named target. No lab, no blind panel. Where the community reads a bottle as an interpretation rather than a copy, we say so and score it accordingly.

Why nobody has cloned the 1995 original well

This is the most useful thing on this page, so it is worth being direct about. The original Le Male is built on a mint-lavender accord over vanilla that was genuinely novel in 1995 and remains distinctive. Reproducing it requires the specific balance between the sharp aromatic top and the sweet base — too little mint and it is a vanilla scent, too much and it is a shaving cream.

Clone houses optimize for materials that are cheap and long-lasting, which means sweet and heavy. That is why every attempt drifts toward Ultra Male territory: the sweet end of the family is much easier to hit at a low price. It is the same economics we describe on our Invictus dupes page, where the clean original is similarly under-served.

If the 1995 bottle is what you want, buy it. It is an eau de toilette that discounts heavily and comes in a large bottle, and it sits on our under $100 roundup for that reason. Spending twenty dollars on something that will not scratch the itch is a false economy.

Which flanker do you actually want?

A quick decision rule, since this is where most people go wrong:

  • Want mint and freshness with sweetness underneath? The 1995 original. No clone here will do.
  • Want sweet and fruity, for nights out in cold weather? Ultra Male territory — Ramz Silver for accuracy, Glacier Ultra if you want it drier.
  • Want honey, tobacco and vanilladensity? Le Male Elixir territory — The Kingdom.

A note on batch variation

Clone-house quality control is less consistent than designer production, and wearers regularly report the same fragrance smelling different between batches. That is a real risk at this price and it is not a reason to avoid the category — it is a reason to buy from a seller with a returns policy. Our where to buy guide covers the channels worth trusting, and are cologne clones worth it weighs the whole trade.

How we picked

We did not lab-test this gear

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty products. We have not lab-tested any of these, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published specifications, decoded the ingredient (INCI) lists active by active, ran the math where there was math to run, and scored each product against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research — not measurements we took, because we do not have a lab and we will not pretend we do. Where a number came from someone else's work, we name them in Sources.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best Le Male dupe?
It depends which Le Male you mean. Lattafa The Kingdom is the best Le Male Elixir impression; Lattafa Ramz Silver is the closest to Ultra Male; Maison Alhambra Glacier Ultra is a drier, spicier Ultra Male reading. Nothing we could verify does a good job of the 1995 original.
Is there a clone of the original Le Male?
Not a convincing one that we could verify. The mint-lavender-vanilla balance of the 1995 original is difficult to reproduce cheaply, and almost every attempt drifts toward the sweeter Ultra Male end of the family. If the original is what you want, buy the original - it discounts heavily.
What is the difference between Le Male and Ultra Male?
They are flankers - separate fragrances, not two strengths of one. Le Male (1995) is mint and lavender over vanilla. Ultra Male (2015) is pear and blackcurrant over the same base, considerably sweeter and more gourmand. Le Male Elixir (2023) adds honey and tobacco.
Are Le Male clones as long-lasting as the original?
Generally longer, in fact. Clone houses lean on heavy, sweet base materials that outlast the lighter designer compositions. What you trade is refinement in the transitions and consistency between batches, not raw performance.
